The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets, is looking for a new Advocacy Manager.

Job Responsibilities

The Advocacy Manager day-to-day work will involve a wide variety of tasks. Given that this is a new position, the specific set of tasks will likely evolve over time.

The Advocacy Manager is expected to develop a deep understanding of ANDE’s key global advocacy influence targets, including international donors and institutions with relevance to the small and growing business sector. The Manager is expected to work across a variety of issue areas within the small and growing business sector. The position will include a particular focus on advocacy supporting climate and environmental action, gender equality and promoting job growth and decent work through the lens of small and growing businesses and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Advocacy Manager will regularly engage directly with representatives from key donor institutions as well as UN, government, multilateral and bilateral institutions and other key stakeholders, as well as working across ANDE’s global team to develop and disseminate materials that will help increase investment and drive behavior change among key target organizations. In addition, the Advocacy Manager will work with ANDE’s eight regional chapters to help chapter staff design and implement relevant advocacy campaigns targeting regional, national, and/or sub-national institutions and policymakers.

Day To Day Tasks Will Therefore Include:

  • Identifying key stakeholders that can help drive ANDE’s advocacy strategy forward;
  • Holding in-person and virtual meetings with representatives from international institutions; representing ANDE at key events;
  • Developing highly targeted advocacy strategies and tactics for a range of key global and regional stakeholders relevant to the SGB sector
  • Providing talking points and guidance to ANDE Senior Management Team members who are attending key events and meetings;
  • Coordinating with ANDE staff to design, develop, and disseminate advocacy-related materials;
  • Providing strategic input into chapter advocacy activities, especially those related to climate action;
  • Tracking and reporting of ANDE’s advocacy activities to ANDE’s Senior Management Team members; and
  • Other advocacy-related tasks as needed.

The position will provide an opportunity to develop a wide variety of skills including:

  • direct engagement with high-level representatives from international institutions;
  • strategic planning for advocacy programming;
  • action-oriented communications;
  • translation of research findings into actionable insights; and
  • stakeholder engagement and facilitation.
  • Deeper understanding of climate and environmental challenges and opportunities through the lens of the Small Growing Business Sector and its support ecosystem.

This role will be based out of ANDE’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Candidates based in other locations in the United States willing to work remotely may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this role has:

  • A bachelor’s degree at a minimum, with a master’s degree preferred, in a relevant field (public policy, international relations, political science, communications, etc.), and 4-7 years of relevant work experience in a similar international setting.
  • Extensive experience with developing and implementing advocacy campaigns and activities in the international development or adjacent sectors, with a wide range of international institutions and other stakeholders
  • Building effective partnerships for joint advocacy platforms and engagement with key ANDE partners and other stakeholders
  • Experience directly or indirectly engaging with regional, national, and local government representatives in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, or South and Southeast Asia.
  • A broad understanding of the donor landscape of support for international small business entrepreneurship programming.
  • Experience with programs, policies, and institutions working to use entrepreneurship as a tool to drive climate and environmental action.
  • In-depth knowledge of key international climate goals and agreements and at least an intermediate understanding of and familiarity with key current and emerging priorities in the climate policy, finance and innovation sectors across mitigation, adaptation and resilience as well as climate justice in developing economies.
  • Familiarity with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and their targets, particularly those relating to climate change, gender equality and decent work and economic growth.
  • Experience engaging directly with high-level representatives of international institutions and supporting principals engaging with these representatives.
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent organization skills and a self-starter approach, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong planning capabilities as well as some budget development experience.
  • A team player mentality.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time including domestically and internationally (once travel is safe to resume)
  • Fluency in English. Second language skills preferred, particularly Spanish, French, or Portuguese.
