Sustainability Director, North America

Oatly is looking for a Sustainability Director, North America business to join their team.

The person in this role will operationalize Oatly’s global sustainability priorities for their North America business unit and spearhead and guide new sustainability initiatives, partnerships and campaigns in the region. This role will report to the President of Oatly North America, work collaboratively across Operations, Communications, Commercial, and Finance functions and be the key liaison with Oatly’s Global Sustainability team. This position will be 100% remote.

Here are the things we want to hire you to do:

  • IMPACT: Partner with Oatly’s Chief Sustainability Officer and the Global Sustainability team to design and implement sustainability initiatives to drive progress toward Oatly’s sustainability goals
  • INFLUENCE: Multiply Oatly’s sustainability influence and impact by launching strategic partnerships with customers, suppliers, peer companies, respected NGOs, government agencies, and others on critical global challenges, such as climate change
  • IMPROVE: Lead projects to assess environmental and social impacts of Oatly’s products and operations in the region, and co-design with functional leaders associated improvements. Work closely with Operations team to drive measurement and improvement mindset on sustainability metrics, such as energy, water, and waste, through sourcing and production
  • TRACK PROGRESS: Establish a sustainability data collection and analysis process and coordinate North America inputs into corporate reporting, partnering across functions
  • COMMUNICATE: Serve as a technical expert resource for Communications, Commercial and Creative teams to articulate Oatly’s sustainability values, impact and unique contribution that create meaningful competitive advantage
  • ADVOCATE & EDUCATE: Serve as a leader and advocate with the US organization for sustainability goals and build capacity in the organization to better authentically embody Oatly sustainability values
  • BUILD: Build and lead a team of data analysts and project managers

Here are the things we think you need:

  • Deep, demonstrated technical expertise in sustainability topics, with preference given to climate change, renewable energy, nature & biodiversity, and agriculture
  • Intrinsic and authentic resonance with Oatly’s sustainability values and demonstrated commitment to drive meaningful change in food and beverage industry
  • 10 to 15 years of specialized industry experience in sustainability or environmental management, with roles in at least two of the following sectors: corporate sustainability, consulting, government agency, or non-government organization (NGO)
  • Demonstrated thought leadership in a professional capacity in global sustainability issues, such as climate change, conservation, or human rights
  • Significant experience creating and driving organizational transformation
  • At least 3 years’ experience leading and supervising multidisciplinary teams in a matrixed setting
  • Experience leading complex projects with multiple stakeholders, working across cultures and functions, and managing for impact
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting scientific and academic work and distilling key messages and projects for different audiences and publishing or posting these messages through external media (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, professional blogs, posted media interviews, etc.)
  • Experience designing and leading sustainability initiatives, translating values into actions, managing for impact, and delivering meaningful and measurable results
  • Experience working with the private sector, the public, media, government officials, and with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, including delivering public presentations
  • Ability to travel – up to 20-30%, including internationally
  • Advanced degree required. Preference for academic focus in sustainability-related focus or discipline
