Overview

The VP, Social Impact Strategy and Operations leads grant making operations for the Mastercard Impact Fund, an independent private foundation launched in 2018, and strategy development for the Center for Inclusive Growth, the philanthropic hub of Mastercard. In his/her role, the VP, Social Impact Strategy and Operations leads philanthropic operations of the Impact Fund, developing the Fund’s capacity to scale its grant making impact

Role

The VP, Social Impact Strategy and Operations is a leader with strategy experience and a proven track record of creative problem-solving and project management to join a high-growth, mission-driven organization. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer, Sustainability and Center for Inclusive Growth

Strategy

  • Lead the formulation, analytical review, preparation, integration and monitoring of to the Center and Fund social impact strategy
  • Lead projects or major work streams related to emerging strategic issues and business area strategies as needed
  • Develop the Sustainability and Center’s strategy and objectives, and communicate them to internal and external parties

Mastercard Impact Fund Oversight
Governance/Board Management

  • Keep Board apprised of progress toward goals; effectively communicate and present critical governance and financial matters, including at board of directors’ meetings
  • Develop and/or oversee preparation and presentation of grants, initiatives and leadership requests and reports to be considered for Board action

Grants Management

  • Lead philanthropic operations of the Impact Fund, developing the Fund’s capacity to scale its grant making impact
  • Develop and manage grant making budget to facilitate strategic goals and to ensure required annual distribution
  • Facilitate, in partnership with legal counsel, the Fund’s grant making by advising staff on how to address and find solutions as questions arise
  • Serve as strategic partner to programmatic leads to ensure strong grant portfolio and board recommendations
  • Screen and review grant applications to make final recommendations to Fund President and Board Compliance/ Systems/ M&E
  • Manage risk management matters and ensure systems and processes are in place to comply with laws applicable to private foundations, including IRS lobbying, state and local lobbying laws, self-dealing and campaign intervention regulations
  • Assist with drafting policies, presentations, reports, and correspondence
  • Ensure strong monitoring and evaluation practices to drive rigorous, data-based recommendations to the Fund Board and Management

Corporate Philanthropy Leadership

  • Lead and manage cross-functional initiatives and projects with the leadership team
  • Forecasts, tracks and evaluates philanthropic contributions across the Company
  • Evaluates philanthropic contributions across the Company

All About You

  • Demonstrated experience with operational procedures including contractual, financial, and compliance
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
  • Experience with or knowledge of corporate foundation processes and protocols
  • General Management – broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems and marketing
  • Strong analytical and data-driven mindset that translates into leadership skills
  • Effective process, workflow, and systems designer; good at measuring progress; a master at the effectiveness and efficiency of work systems; can quickly diagnose and fix a workflow problem
  • Acts with urgency; is emotionally intelligent and agile
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to influence and build credibility; team oriented, collaborative, diplomatic, and flexible
  • Personal presence and ability to clearly communicate compelling messages to senior management and business partners
  • Consulting experience preferred
  • JD/ MBA / Advanced degree required
